The Gateway to Char Dham Yatra
Every great journey needs a worthy beginning. For the Char Dham Yatra, that beginning is almost always Haridwar — the ancient city where the Ganga descends from the mountains to the plains, where the boundary between the sacred and the ordinary dissolves, and where millions of pilgrims have begun their Himalayan journeys for thousands of years.
Why Haridwar is the Gateway
Haridwar (literally "Gateway to God" — Hari = Vishnu/God, Dwar = Gate) sits at the precise point where the Ganga leaves the Himalayan foothills and enters the plains. It is both the last major city with full urban infrastructure (rail, road, hospitals, markets) before the mountains, and the first sacred city on the Ganga — making it the natural launch pad for the Char Dham.
Logistically, Haridwar has:
• A major railway station (connected to Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and most major cities)
• Highway access to all four Char Dham routes
• Full banking, ATM, medical, and shopping facilities
• Hundreds of pilgrim-friendly hotels at all price points
Har Ki Pauri and the Evening Ganga Aarti
The Har Ki Pauri ghat — "steps of the Lord" — is the spiritual heart of Haridwar. Here, every evening at sunset, the Ganga Aarti is performed: a breathtaking ceremony of lamps, flowers, bells, and chants offered to the river goddess.
The evening Ganga Aarti at Har Ki Pauri typically begins at 6:30–7:30 PM (varies by season). Priests stand on the ghat steps, swinging large oil-lamp wicks in sweeping circles, while temple bells ring and loudspeakers carry devotional songs across the river. The ghats are lined with thousands of devotees holding small leaf-boats with marigolds and clay oil lamps, which they release into the current.
Attending the Ganga Aarti at Har Ki Pauri the evening before beginning the Char Dham Yatra is considered one of the most auspicious ways to start the pilgrimage.
Mansa Devi and Chandi Devi Temples
Two goddess temples on the hills above Haridwar complete the essential darshan:
• Mansa Devi Temple: Accessible by cable car (ropeway) or a short trek — dedicated to the goddess who fulfills wishes. Excellent views of Haridwar.
• Chandi Devi Temple: On the opposite hill, accessible by a separate cable car or a 3 km trek — dedicated to the fierce goddess Chandi.
Both temples together are called the Panch Teertha of Haridwar and are essential stops before the Char Dham journey.
Hotels in Haridwar for Yatra Pilgrims
Haridwar has hundreds of hotels near Har Ki Pauri and along the Canal Road:
• Budget (₹500–₹1,200): Hotels near the main bazaar and ghat area
• Mid-range (₹1,500–₹4,000): Good options near the railway station and bypass road
• Comfortable (₹4,000+): Several chain hotels (Radisson, Ganga Lahari) on the bypass
Book in advance during peak yatra season (May, June) — Haridwar itself is always full of pilgrims.
Getting from Haridwar to Each Dham
• To Yamunotri base (Barkot): 220 km | Via Rishikesh → Vikasnagar or Mussoorie
• To Gangotri base (Uttarkashi): 215 km | Via Rishikesh → Devprayag → Srinagar → Uttarkashi
• To Kedarnath base (Gaurikund): 250 km | Via Rishikesh → Rudraprayag → Sonprayag
• To Badrinath: 295 km | Via Rishikesh → Devprayag → Rudraprayag → Joshimath
